Meeting Minutes
The Township Board meets on the first Monday of each month
(if Monday is a holiday we meet the following day) at 7:30 p.m. There is always
opportunity for Township residents to comment on anything relating to the
Township. This means you are welcome to the meetings.
A regular meeting of the Assyria Township Board was held at the Assyria Township Hall on August 2, 2010. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

minutes were reviewed and approved with changes. Last sentence in Supervisor’s
report to read “Discussed plan to RFP or a bid process to obtain state tax
commission approved assessing company to re-assess properties not yet
re-assessed by the current township assessor (approx 400 properties).

bills were reviewed. Motion by

CLERK:

Grant for Polling Place Handicap Accessibility to make paved handicap parking
and entrance.
-Clerk
and Treasurer met with auditor to prepare for bi-annual audit. Auditor recommended the following to be
compliant with State law.
- Monthly payroll of
township official instead of quarterly.
- Purchase accounting
program to track expenses and revenue and to track balance sheet items
- Audit should be conducted
on Union Cemetery
- Auditor will explain
results of audit at September Township meeting

use officially in an election
-State of Michigan has grants available for making voting areas
handicap accessible. Clerk to research for potential for township.

-Trustee Miller discussed overlap on cemetery with Brian Reynolds
the county surveyor.
SUPERVISOR
-Village of Bellevue has discussed option of no longer being a
part of ownership of the Bellevue Fire Board within a five year period.
-Mr. Dennis McKelvey presented list of appraisal companies to
Board. He reported completing 59
assessments in the current year.
Extensive discussion with Board regarding property cards and possibility
of State 14 point review. Discussed plan to RFP or a bid process to obtain

clinic in Charlotte

as a health clinic

-Trustee Miller noted that there were new shrubs/bushes that
looked recently planted in the Township Cemeteries. Sexton was instructed to remove them as it violates the
Cemetery Ordinance.
-Discussed creating (lay out) new section in Ellis Cemetery.
SUPERVISOR
-Motion by Supervisor to prepare new contract for Sexton in the
amount of $11,000 annually, Support by Massimino, Roll call taken all members
vote yes. To be effective 6/1/10
with Complete Lawn Care, LLC
-Discussed future road improvements. Discussed prioritization of future road improvements for
Assyria Township.
-State recommending that 20% of parcels are re-assessed every
year.

The Annual Meeting of the Assyria Township
Board was held at the Assyria Township hall on March 31, 2010. The meeting was called to order at 7:33 p.m.

Fiscal Year 2010 financial statements presented with an ending
fund balance of $470,957.13.
Motion by Timmons, support from Miller to maintain meeting
dates. Those dates are the first
Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
If the first Monday is a federally observed holiday, the meeting will be
held the Tuesday following the Monday that is a holiday at 7:30 pm. With the inclusion that Thursday,
March 31,, 2011 will be the Township annual meeting, budget and
regular (April) meeting. There
will be no regular meeting in April 2011. Roll call taken, all members vote yes.

-Trial
for Resident violating junk ordinance has been postponed due to weather
-Charges
from Bellevue Community Fire Board to be $90,163.50 for Fiscal Year 2011. $20,000 for regular township portion,
$70.163.40 for water tender. The
Fire Board expects to expend about $2,000 (from its equipment fund) for special
fittings after arrival of the new truck.
There will be a budget meeting on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 7pm and an
annual meeting April 19.

-Trustee Miller sent letter to Representative Calley requesting

-Trustee Bylsma reported 11% reduction in crime as reported from
Michigan State Police.

-Reported to the Bellevue Community Fire Dept. that Assyria
Township feels the cost is excessive for pumper/tanker. Community Fire Board is expanding it’s
search for a more cost effective water tender.

-Nashville Dam has been completely removed
-Soil and water conservation district was discussed to be eliminated by
State of Michigan which could negatively impact Barry County. MSU extension received the funding at
the last minute.

Questions were raised by Mr. Ron Angus regarding legal descriptions and

Miller met with County Surveyor at Checkered Cemetery. County Surveyor was not able to assist
with finding graves with the equipment he has. Trustee Miller has composed a letter to Representative
Calley to request his influence in obtaining assistance from Grand Valley State
University archaeology department in locating graves. This would allow for the possibility of researching
expansion of the cemetery for future burials.
